From concept artist to production designer, Doug Chiang has held a variety of roles in the art department since graduating from UCLA in 1986. His first position in film was as a concept artist for Back to the Future Part II (1989). Years later, in 1993, Chiang won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in Death Becomes Her (1992). Chiang received his first role as a production designer 11 years later, in the film The Polar Express (2004), and has since worked on multiple films, including A Christmas Carol (2009) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). In 2020, Chiang began working as a production designer on TV series such as The Mandalorian (2020), The Book of Boba Fett (2021), and Ahsoka (2023). Currently, Chiang serves as Lucasfilm’s Senior Vice President and Executive Design Director.
