About

Méliès was a pioneering French filmmaker, actor, magician, and toymaker. He was one of cinema's earliest innovators, especially known for fantasy, magic theatre style films, and for developing many foundational special effects techniques. His most famous film was A Trip to the Moon (1902). He is credited with popularizing techniques such as substitution splices, multiple exposures, dissolves, timelapse photography, and hand-painted color in film, all essential to early cinematic special effects. Méliès story was fictionalized in the film Hugo. Many copies of his art were featured in the film and is shown under the film Hugo on this site.
