ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Remembered for stunning cinematography and incredible sets, this film was nominated for Academy Awards in both cinematography and art direction. The film focuses on Michelangelo's struggle to paint the epic ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, this movie required a full suite of sets which resembled Italy in the early 16th century. DeCuir was able to utilize some of the local architecture and environment as much of the film was shot on location Italy. The design highlight for this film was an entire replica of the Sistine Chapel.
SUMMARY
Pope Julius is eager to leave behind works by which he will be remembered. To this end he cajoles Michelangelo into painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When not on the battlefield uniting Italy, the Pope nags Michelangelo to speed up his painful work on the frescoes.
